Common Questions & Swaps

Feeling extra fancy? Rub some lime on the rim of your glass and dip it in brown sugar!

  • Can I use another sweetener instead of maple syrup? Yes absolutely. I would suggest using a liquid sweetener though as it mixes in well with the other liquid ingredients. Sweetener options include: agave, simple syrup, or honey if you are not vegan.

  • Can I make this cocktail alcohol free? Yes, I would just make sure that either 1) your kombucha has a distinct flavour or 2) that you use more passion fruit.

  • Can I swap the rum with another liquor? Probably. I am not a cocktail expert so I am not sure what other liquor apart from brown rum would fit well here, but if you know your way around liquors, feel free to swap the white rum and make sure to let me know in the comments which liquor you swapped it with.

Let me tell you something: I am not a huge cocktail drinker. First, I don’t drink much alcohol and when I do, my go to is definitely red wine.

Cocktails always kind of intimidate me. They very often require either 1) lots of sugar, 2) fancy liquors I do not own or 3) ingredients I do not have on hand like bitters. So for those reasons, I tend to stay away from them.

However, when Liquor.com approached me to collaborate with them and create a brand new cocktail recipe for an Instagram takeover I did on their feed, I thought, ‘‘challenge accepted!’’

So I went on a mission to create a super simple cocktail, that almost anyone can make, that is customizable, not too sweet and yet still refreshing and packed with flavour.

That is how this cocktail was born.

It only requires 5 ingredients (one of which is ice!). It is not packed with sugar and I give you the option to use a more natural sweetener, maple syrup. You don’t need special measuring, shaking, whisking, blending tools to make it: just add all ingredients into a glass, mix and enjoy.

The only tricky part of this cocktail is passion fruit. If you live in a hot country, you will have no real issue finding some, especially in the months when it is in season. However, if you live in a colder country, you might have to visit a few different places to find some. I live in Canada and I found some in 4 of the 8 grocery shops around me, so it is possible!

This cocktail is so sweet, refreshing and tropical that I have no doubt it will become one of my go tos. I have to admit I already had it twice since I first shot it a week ago.

On that note, I hope you are all doing super well and that you are enjoying your first summer days!
